“Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace.”
— From the Dhammapada (Buddhism)

THIS WEEK’S LESSON

Wisdom Reading

Today’s Excerpt: Wisdom Reading

When you feel overwhelmed by life, words can sometimes help — especially when you give them your full attention in a practice called wisdom reading.

Try these steps to practice wisdom reading:

  1. Choose a passage that’s meaningful to you — or the option below. Take a comfortable seat and breathe out slowly until you feel more relaxed.
  2. Read or think about the passage to yourself slowly.
  3. You could read it out loud or even have someone else read it to you.
  4. Pick one word or phrase, and repeat it several times.
  5. What do you notice?

“May I find the serenity of mind
to accept the things about myself
that can’t be changed,
the strength to change the things
that can be changed,
and the wisdom to know the difference.”

  • Sentence stem: “The wisest thing I could tell myself right now is…”
