“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
— Martin Luther King, Jr.

THIS WEEK’S LESSON

Courage

Today’s Excerpt:

Watch “Sara Bareilles – Brave | Cover by One Voice Children’s Choir” (4-min video) to hear a children’s choir sing about bravery.

You can be amazing …
You can start speaking up

Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly, I wanna see you be brave

Discuss:

  • What is something you can start speaking up about?
  • How does it feel in your body when you’re scared to speak up? How does it feel after you speak?

For older kids and teens, watch “The Secret Student Resistance to Hitler” (5-min video) from TED-Ed to learn the story of teenagers who opposed the Nazis in Germany and were executed for it.

Reflect:

  • Right before her execution, Sophie said, “How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause. Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?” Do her words awaken you to any injustice you might speak out against?
