“Develop enough courage so that you can stand up for yourself and then stand up for somebody else.”
— Maya Angelou, poet

THIS WEEK’S LESSON

Courage

Today’s Excerpt:

Watch “The Breathtaking Courage of Harriet Tubman” (5-min video) from TED-Ed to hear the life’s story of Harriet Tubman.

Discuss:

  • Harriet Tubman repeatedly stood up for herself and others. What are some of the excuses she could have used to avoid showing courage? (She could have listened to her fears and stayed enslaved, she could have decided that since she escaped she didn’t need to return to help others, she could have decided she had done enough and didn’t need to help women vote, etc.)
  • How do you think Harriet Tubman found the strength to stay courageous? How do you find that same strength inside of you?

For littles:

  • Harriet Tubman was brave and helped people in her life. When do you feel brave in your life?
