"Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive."
— Dalai Lama

THIS WEEK’S LESSON

Compassion

Today’s Excerpt:

Note: This story comes from our Wisdom Before Writing lesson.

Who needs compassion right now?

In an ancient burial site, researchers recently discovered the bones of a grown man with signs of lifelong paralysis. This man couldn’t move on his own, a fact which tells us something. It tells us that this man’s friends and family didn’t leave him behind. Instead, they fed and cared for him.

This quality of human compassion is an essential aspect of wisdom.

Here’s an image of the bones from a news article that tells more about this story.

Discuss:

  • A philosopher (a word meaning “lover of wisdom”) once wrote, “What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?” How is it wise to be kind?
  • Do you know someone who deserves compassion? What can you do for them today?
